Thunderstorms

Type in thunderstorm or thunderstorms to find stories about thunderstorms along with books containing factual information about thunderstorms. Both of these keywords/subject headings lead to the same results. One great pick for factual information is Lightning and Thunder by Herbert Spencer Zim.

Tornadoes

Typing in tornado will not give you any information because it is not a subject heading. It will guide you to use tornadoes, so use tornadoes as your search term. While there are a lot of great stories about tornadoes, there are also a lot of great factual books. Tornado!: The Strongest Winds on Earth by Mike Graf is a great choice to help you find information about tornadoes and how they form.

Thunderstorms and Tornadoes

-To find all of the books on either thunderstorms or tornadoes in one search, complete an advanced search. Click the search tab at the top. From there, click on advanced. When the advanced search box pops up, type thunderstorms in the search term box. Then, click add criteria. Make sure the circle by or is selected, and type tornadoes in the second, empty, search term box. Books on either topic will be displayed on one page. Make sure that you use your original search terms of thunderstorms and tornadoes. Once you have typed in the information, click search to display your results.

-Our library has two great books about both thunderstorms and tornadoes, Storms by Seymour Simon and Storms by Ted O'Hare. They can both be found through the above search of thunderstorms or tornadoes.

All of these factual books will be in the 551 section of the non-fiction books in our library. When you walk in the library, the non-fiction books are on the left side of the library. Look for the sign that says Science 500. When you find it, look for a smaller sign on the shelf that says Earth Sciences and Geology 550. From there, start looking for 551.5 and the first three letters of the author's last name on the side of the books. 551.5 stands for meteorology, and remember, meteorology is the study of weather.
